A colectivo is a form of transportation widely used in Mexico to move the population around from one destination to another. They operate similar to bus service except they will pick-up and drop-off passengers anywhere along the highway. The colectivos in the Mayan Riviera are new vans with air-conditioning. Prices range from 20 to 40 pesos depending on distance traveling. There are two companies that operate the colectivos that run along the highway. The Taxi Union operates between Cancun and Playa del Carmen and between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Playa Express only runs between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.
Outside of the tourist zones, and within some of the towns, the vans are often older and without air-conditioning and cost as little as 10 pesos. In some places they are called “combis”.
